Acute Pain — This kind of pain will start suddenly and only last for a short time, i.e. minutes or a few days. When you suffer from acute pain, you normally will know what has caused it. For example, an insect bite, cutting your finger with a knife or a migraine headache.
The length of time and how often it occurs determine chronic pain. Normally, chronic pain is labelled after three months. It will result from a medical condition such as any form of arthritis or fibromyalgia, a rheumatic condition generally characterized by muscular or musculoskeletal pain with stiffness and localized tenderness at specific points on the body. Chronic pain can also continue after the body has healed. It is almost as if the nerves forget to tell the brain the danger is over.
